Our Story
In 2022, our magnificent 100-year-old black walnut tree was uprooted by a fierce storm. After the tree toppled, the enormous hole left by the root ball revealed a deep bed of glacial lake-bottom clay deposited during the last Ice Age.
As potters who were using commercial clay, we were intrigued.
After lots of experimenting, we finally came up with a recipe that uses between 60% and 75% of our clay. Our new clay bodies responded well to compression (to being rolled into a flat slab). This was the beginning of tile making.
Using our own clay has given us the opportunity to experiment and learn more about both clay and glaze.
Many a winter's night were spent reading about glaze ingredients!
